Good, but not for absolute beginners
Good value. Not perfect, but I would buy another book from this author.
I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
Better than I expected. Rare to find a technical book this well judged.
This is the third book I have read on javascript this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
An enjoyable and informative read, though it could have been shorter.
I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.
Outstanding. I kept finding reasons to come back to it.
I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. This is the book I wish had existed when I started working with javascript.
Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.
I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. A couple of chapters felt like they could have been merged, but that is a minor complaint. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
A superb guide. The examples are small but complete.
I have been working with javascript for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.
