Solid and well-organised
Good book. The writing is direct and the author is honest about limits.
I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
Mixed feelings. The good parts are genuinely good; the rest is forgettable.
There is a particular kind of technical book that is dense without being difficult, and this is one of them. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. Useful as a reference, less so as a straight read from cover to cover.
Decent, but uneven. Some chapters are much stronger than others.
A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. The chapters on game programming are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. Borrow it first if you can, or at least check the table of contents carefully before buying.
A useful guide. The examples assume a particular environment, but that is fixable.
This is the third book I have read on webgpu this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
A useful guide. The examples assume a particular environment, but that is fixable.
I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. The explanations are careful without being condescending, which is a difficult balance to strike. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. A good addition to a technical library, as long as you know what you are buying.
Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.
I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.
